One Last Ride
Chevrolet has announced that the sixth-generation Camaro will end production after the 2024 model year and that will be the end of the two-door muscle car with a high-performance gasoline engine. However, Chevy tells us that the end of the six-generation is just the end of this chapter in the book of Camaro.
Â
The sporty Camaro first appeared in 1966, bred to go head-to-head with the Ford Mustang. It shared its platform and components with the Pontiac Firebird that debuted the following year. There were four mighty incarnations of the tire-burning Camaro until production ceased in 2002.
Â
The completely reimagined fifth generation Camaro sprang back to life in 2009 and was a hit for the automaker, in both coupe and convertible versions. In 2010 it took the World Car Design of the Year Award. From a 3.6-liter V6 to a meaty 505 horsepower 7-liter V8 engine in the Z28 variant, the Camaro entered its sixth generation in 2016 for the vehicle's 50th Anniversary. From 1967 to 2022, 5,594,460 Camaros were sold.

Collector's Edition
Chevy says that the last sixth-generation Camaro will roll off the production line in January 2024 and to honor the muscle car's legacy, it will offer a special "Collector's Edition" package with the idea of paying homage to the Mustang Killer's remarkable history. Teaser images show off a sinister hood scoop and a major rear wing suggesting that this special edition will have plenty of horses under the hood to provide proud owners with plenty of performance.
Â
Rumor has it that Chevrolet will say so long to several of its gasoline powered models next year, only to eventually bring them back as all-electric vehicles using its Ultium platform. Time will tell, but for those with hope of taking a last gasoline-powered Camaro home in its thrilling Collector's Edition package, Chevy will start taking orders this summer.
Â
Chevrolet's global vice president Scott Bell was recently quoted as saying, "As we prepare to say goodbye to the current generation Camaro, it is difficult to overstate our gratitude to every Camaro customer, Camaro assembly line employee and race fan. While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro's story."
Â
According to Automotive News, both the Camaro and the Malibu will end production as internal combustion vehicles. General Motors has promised to transition to an all-electric model lineup by 2035. So far, its EVs have been positioned in the hottest lanes of the auto market, namely SUVs and pickup trucks. But EVs have breathed new life into the sedan market as well, and GM's brands are turning their attention to performance-oriented EV sedans.

According to GM, the 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector's Edition will be available in RS and SS trim levels as well as a limited number of ZL1-equipped vehicles. These farewell editions will look back at Camaro history, including the original car's code name: Panther. For instance, you'll notice a silhouette of a panther inside the "R" of the Camaro's nameplate. The hood scoop is adorned with the legend ZL1.
