How could GM build a performance-oriented SUV that Americans would embrace? It would have to be something outrageous. Chevrolet originally built the Camaro to go head-to-head with the Mustang. But no, this new go-fast SUV would have to go up against the popular Porsche Cayenne. GM would have to bring out the big guns.

Why is Chevy Making a Corvette SUV?
The answer is simple. It is a matter of success. The idea of turning a high-performance sports car into a family moving Sport Utility Vehicle began in 2002 when Porsche came out with the fiver seater Cayenne. Known for its prowess both on and off-road, the clever Cayenne was, and is, a big hit. The German automaker proved that you could take your kids to soccer practice and still be sporty and cool.
Â
Other ultra-luxury manufacturers followed suit with such high-performance SUVs as the Lamborghini Uris, the Maserati Levante, and the Bentley Bentayaga. The powers that be at General Motors noticed the success of sport-focused go anywhere vehicles but then the competition got closer to home when Ford unveiled its all-electric Mustang Mach-E. Here was a nimble crossover SUV by an American company that managed to attract drivers despite the fact that it was very far away in design and purpose from its famous namesake. This was no Mustang of the muscle car past. This was something new with an all-electric powertrain, plus, it was a big success for Ford. Hmm.
Interestingly, back in 2019 in an interview with Automotive News, no less an auto industry icon than Bob Lutz, former General Motors vice chairman, was asked what he would do with the Corvette brand. "What I would do is develop a dedicated architecture, super lightweight, super powerful, Porsche Cayenne-like, only much better and a little bigger, medium-volume Corvette SUV. Target worldwide 20,000 to 30,000 units, and price it starting at an MSRP of $100,000. Gorgeous interior. No V-6 powertrain. No low-end version. It has to be the stellar premium sport-utility made in the United States, and the Corvette brand could pull that off." Somewhere within the massive GM hive, the Eye of Sauron moved.
Then, in reporting on Mr. Lutz and his Corvette musings, Car & Driver wrote an article that expounded on the concept, but writer Daniel Golson suggested that the new Corvette SUV would have to compete with the Cayenne in price as well as performance and that an entry level model should be priced at around $70,000 MSRP offering a twin-turbo V6 engine.
Â
Fast forward to the present day when a Corvette SUV is indeed in the works. After several years of hesitation, Chevy has announced it will launch the new SUV for model year 2025. That means it could be in showrooms by the end of 2024. Chevy says it has decided to expand the Corvette brand to encompass vehicles beyond two-seaters.
Will the Corvette SUV be Gas or Electric?
As of this writing there is much we don't know about the new Crossover Vette. The company is working on an all-electric performance focused sub-brand, but will the new Corvette SUV appear as an EV like the Mustang Mach-E or will it utilize the chassis and motor from GM's Cadillac CT4V Blackwing? What if there are two versions in the same mold as the Porsche Macan and Cayenne or BMW's X3 M and X5 M offering a choice of a compact as well as a midsize version of the new car?
Â
Given the fact that the SUV will be on a fast track to production, it is likely that the first versions will be gasoline powered and come in V6 and V8 configurations. There could even be a top-of-the-line massive horsepower supercharged variant. Imagine a Corvette Z06 SUV that could hold its own against the Ferrari or Lambo SUVs.
Â
Following the trim levels used with the traditional Corvette sports car, expect the SUV to come in 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT trims with each upgrade including such options as all-wheel drive, more off-road prowess, added luxury for long drives, and the latest safety and driver assist technology. Of course, each trim level will advance the price considerably. Imagine off-road ready extras such as hill descent control, special suspension options, underbody skid plates, and beefier wheels and tires. Who knows, you might even be able to tow your track ready Corvette Z06 behind your new Corvette SUV. But one thing is certain, this will be the first vehicle with a Corvette badge that will be roaring your way with four doors. Starting MSRP in the $60,000 range.Â
