Mercedes-Benz EQE

Known for its high-styled elegant executive sedans, Mercedes-Benz has turned the corner to all-electric transportation in a big way with its gorgeous and exciting EQS model. We had the honor to test drive the EQS 450+ sedan recently and it blew us away. Unfortunately, so did it's MSRP $107,400 price tag. For those who would like to keep the price of their new luxury EV under 100 large, there's a new sheriff in town. We're talking about the exciting all-new Mercedes-Benz EQE.

Poised to take on the Tesla Model S, the EQE sedan is a bit smaller than the EQS but it still offers all the distinctive quality, luxury, and dynamic performance of its big brother, but with an estimated starting MSRP of $74,900. That's impressive when you realize that the Tesla Model S and the EQE are almost exactly the same size (within an inch) and the Model S has a starting MSRP of over $106,000.

Luxury Goes Electric

The German-made EQE is available in two primary variations: the EQE350+ and the EQE500. With a 90.6-kWh battery pack in the EQE350+, Mercedes predicts that driving range will be an EPA-estimate of 305 miles before it needs a charge, and when it does, Level 3 DC Fast Charging will get you from a 20 percent to an 80 percent charge in about 30 minutes. The 350+ will be first in dealerships with a single rear-mounted electric motor offering 288 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Zero to 60 mph will happen in about five and a half seconds. The meatier EQE500 will offer two electric motors, one on each axle, for all-wheel drive and a total of 535 electrified horses.

Industry insiders tell us that an AMG version of the EQE will beef up the horsepower even more with a claimed 677 horsepower and an estimated zero to 60 mph time of a sizzling 3.2 seconds. While the AMG is said to include adaptive damping, upgraded brakes and beefier suspension, there is no word on the price of this rarified stallion as of this writing.

Elegant & Refined

The all-new 2023 EQE350+ is prepared to appear in showrooms as you read these words, and the EQE500 will show up in 2023. The overall look is elegant and refined as you would expect from Mercedes-Benz, the interior is very spacious with luxurious styling cues, and the new Hyperscreen touchscreen doesn't stick out like a flatscreen duct taped to your dash as in the Tesla Model S.

Speaking of, the Hyperscreen is optional and measures 56 inches long across the dash. It utilizes three screens including the gauge cluster and a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen. The passenger also gets a 12.3-inch touchscreen. The nicely integrated Hyperscreen extends the full length of the dash and looks like it belongs there. It makes good use of Mercedes' impressive MBUX infotainment system with its voice command mode and steering touchpad to minimize distracted driving. Without the Hyperscreen, the standard infotainment wonders run through the central touchscreen.

Trim Levels

The EQE will be available in three trim levels known as Premium, Exclusive, and Pinnacle variants. Even in base Premium trim, the EQE is a Mercedes through and through, including a panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone charging pad, in-dash navigation, heated and vented power seats, and a 15-speaker Burmester sound system that places you right in the orchestra pit, all as standard features. Driver assist wonders include forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

The Exclusive Trim package includes adaptive cruise control, screen-integrated parking assist, augmented ambient lighting, and many other high-tech miracles. The ultimate Pinnacle trim adds a heads-up display, four-zone climate control, an upgraded anti-bacteria air filtration system, upgraded USB-C ports, high-end nappa leather seats with a massage function, plus exclusive trim and flourishes such as front doors that open and close automatically.
Both the EQE350+ and the EQE500 are available with a cool rear-wheel drive steering system and air suspension for incredible maneuverability and a very smooth ride. The new electric sedan comes with two years of free charging at Electrify America DC Fast Charging Stations.
