2026 Toyota Tacoma EV

Adding Off Road Spark!

As the world moves towards an all-electric vehicle future, Toyota has been bashed by some environmentalists for taking its time in creating an all-electric Toyota car. That changed with the debut of the excellent bZ4X crossover SUV. The automaker recently held a media briefing to unveil plans for its EV strategy which includes 16 new electric vehicles with plans of building 1.7 million new EVs by 2030. One of the 16 mockups shown was a mid-size pickup truck similar in size and stance to the current Tacoma model.

Adorned with off-road tires, the mockup is an impressive look into the EV future for Toyota. The company also announced new battery technology that could offer up to 621 miles of range and fast charging from 10 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes. It is also working on a solid-state battery technology that will offer higher energy density while reducing the size, weight, and cost of the batteries by half. Solid state batteries could increase range to 744-900 miles and charge in just ten minutes.
The popular brand first mentioned an EV pickup when it debuted the concept that eventually became the bZ4X. Toyota has also patented a simulated manual transmission to add more driver engagement to EVs. Images for the new electric truck look remarkably similar to the all-new 2024 Tacoma and Toyota is said to be delaying the production of its Compact Cruiser EV in order to get the powertrain ready to launch the Tacoma EV in America.

Most Popular EV Pickup

Interestingly, in a recent survey by Autolist, possible truck buyers were asked which EV pickup truck they would be most interested in buying. The answer was surprising. Even though the Tacoma EV doesn't exist yet, it beat out the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Chevy Silverado EV, and the Tesla Cybertruck.

Toyota tells us that the new electric pickup will have a versatile bed and be used for outdoor off-road applications. It would certainly seem wise for the automaker to use the popular Tacoma platform as the basis for its EV. Plus, we think a mid-size EV pickup would make sense as an off roader since the battery pack will ride low under the chassis and give the truck a low center of gravity. Dual electric motors would give it awesome instant acceleration for rock climbing or fording streams.
When can you get one?
Toyota has been saying its priority is to bring both hybrid and BEV versions of its pickup line to the masses "In the near future." It announced plans to launch at least 15 new EV models by 2025 and we know the EV pickup is at the top of its priority list, especially since it has already launched hybrid versions of the Tacoma in 2024. In fact, the only thing holding this snazzy new pickup back is likely the new battery technology we mentioned that will add range and power for towing. Next-gen batteries may be available as soon as 2026 with solid state batteries coming in 2027. All mileage is EPA estimated.
