2022 Jaguar XF

Last Cat Standing
Travel with us now, swiftly and with the growl and purr of an inline six British motor, to a time when the Jaguar marquee was synonymous with sleek and elegant conveyances filled with rich leather and real walnut. The proud motor company from Coventry, England was known for daring designs and whiplash performance since its inception in 1922. No less an icon of the automotive industry than Enzo Ferrari once called the splendid E Type "The most beautiful car in the world." Alas, those days are gone.
Twenty years ago, when Ford owned Jaguar and infused the company with loads of cash, you could purchase a Supercharged V8-powered XJR or XKR that would rocket you from zero to 60 mph in a scant five seconds. For 2022, the Jag line of sedans has been reduced to exactly one model… the XF. Far from being the most beautiful car in the world, this four-door looks more like a Volvo clone and its 2-liter four-cylinder engine (Yes, we said four-cylinder), even in its more powerful 296-horsepower version can barely manage a sprint to 60 mph in 6.3-seconds. How the mighty have fallen.

On the positive side, the new midsize luxury XF only costs half of what those steel stallions of old would have set you back. This luxury car is less expensive than its direct competition, the BMW 5-series or Audi A6. The Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price begins at $45,300 and you get a lot for that including a silken ride and remarkable handling. We long for a V8 version to pack more punch to this feline, or even the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 version that has been sadly discontinued. Still, the interior is pure premium, wrapping you in rich leather and plenty of high tech features.

Under the Bonnet

Sorry, we had to say "bonnet," because even though this car is owned by Tata Motors in India, it is still thought of as a British brand and the word "hood" just doesn't cut it. At any rate, under the bonnet, you'll find the afore-mentioned turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is available in the P250 version, producing 246-horsepower, or the P300 that squeezes out 296 ponies. Both of these are married to an ample eight-speed automatic transmission. The P250 comes in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive variants, while the P300 is only available in AWD.

The EPA estimates the rear-wheel drive XF fuel economy to be 25 miles per gallon in the city and 33 miles per gallon on the highway. The more amped up P300 sucks a bit more gas, rated at 22 mpg city and 30 on the highway.

In the Cabin

Redesigned for 2022, the spacious interior of this Jag gives you plenty of passenger and cargo space with excellent headroom, legroom, and plenty of room in the trunk for your mother-in-law. You may notice that the rotary shifter of last year is gone, replaced by a new shift handle and drive mode selector that lowers itself and disappears when not in use. The redesigned center console is more user-friendly and includes a wireless charger and more storage.

The front grain leather seats are wider than last year's model and more comfortable. All levels of XF models now include Jaguar's Pivi Pro infotainment system. Billed as being faster, more intuitive, and always keeping you connected, the Pivi Pro is still a dreadful name. However, you can download software-over-the-air, stream music and connect to apps fairly easily. You can even connect two smartphones at once so the driver and passenger can enjoy hands-free connectivity.
The Wrap Up
With above average warranty coverage, the XF has a five year or 60,000 miles complimentary scheduled maintenance package. A limited warranty and powertrain warranty covers the same five years or 60,000 miles. While the XF is now the only Jaguar sedan you can buy, the company still offers the excellent E-Pace crossover, the F-Pace luxury SUV, the I-Pace all-electric SUV, and the magnificent F-Type two-seater sports car that still pounces like a true Jaguar.

A great deal for a luxury sedan bearing the Jaguar "Growler" badge, the XF S model's MSRP starts at $45,300; the XF SE starts at $48,100; and the XF R-Dynamic SE begins at $51,000.
