Kia Telluride SUV

New Kia Telluride
The Family-Friendly Kia Telluride SUV
It is no surprise that the automobile chassis-based crossover has become the ultimate family vehicle today, pushing standard sedan models nearly out of existence and making the family station wagon a thing of the past. On a quest to find the best value for our customers seeking a family mover that offers three rows of seating, narrowed its gaze to explore a vehicle that ticks all the boxes of family-friendly features. We give you the Kia Telluride.

Three Row Crossover

Imagine the look and quality of a Ranger Rover for a third of the price. Kia's excellent Telluride is a family-sized, three row crossover SUV that is drenched in style and value. Prices start at just under $32,000 for the base LX model with all-wheel-drive available for $2,000 more. Built in Georgia and crafted specifically for the U.S. market, the Telluride is big for a mid-size SUV. Much bigger than a Kia Sorrento and it has more visual presence too.

All of the Kia Telluride trim levels come with a 3.8-liter V6 engine offering 294 horsepower with an eight-speed, automatic transmission. It can tow 5,000 pounds and gets 23mpg. The SUV comes with an industry-leading 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and runs perfectly well on regular unleaded gasoline.

In a highway fuel-economy test of over 200 miles at a consistent 75 mph, the clever crossover averaged 27 mpg. Considering that the Telluride weighs 4,507 pounds, that's pretty impressive.

Behind the Wheel

Whether you are driving the snarled, traffic clogged freeways of Los Angeles, traversing the rocky mountain roads of Colorado amidst a blizzard, or blasting through the blazing heat of Death Valley, the Telluride endures all with comfort, safety, and is pretty much perfect for any environment. For daily driving, the V-6 supplies plenty of power and the eight-speed, automatic transmission is completely flawless. In Snow Traction mode, this SUV can take you pretty much anywhere.

Drivers can choose from between Eco, Comfort, Sport and Smart driving modes so that the Telluride is tuned for a smooth ride and capable handling no matter what the road beneath you is doing. If you spend a lot of time in traffic, it includes an Auto Hold function that will hold the vehicle still without you having to have your foot on the brake pedal. This is a particularly smart feature for anyone who lives in a city and has to traverse the urban jungle of stop and go traffic out there.
Impressive Cargo Space
Inside, this family wagon also offers a lot of luxury and an incredible wealth of tech features for the price. All the controls are laid out in a very logical manner, are intuitive and easy to use. You'll find comfortable seating, with Napa leather upholstery on the SX version's "Prestige Package," 10-way power adjustment for the driver's seat, and the front seats are heated as is the steering wheel.

The second row captain's chairs are also heated, a rarity in luxury SUVs let alone in one priced under 50K. Dual sunroofs and side window shades are another nice, quality touch in the SX variant. Grab handles exist everywhere you need them to allow getting in or out of all three rows of seats.

Behind the third row of seating, the Telluride gives you 21-cubic feet of cargo space. Fold the third row seats down and you'll get 46-feet of cargo space for you and your family. Drop the second row as well and you'll have an impressive 87 cubic feet to work with. A smart tailgate comes with the higher trim models that senses the key fob and automatically opens the back of the vehicle for those times when your hands are full of groceries or sports equipment or camping gear… or all of the above.
A Look Inside
Driver Assist features include a dual camera setup that shows a rear view of what is on each side of the vehicle. Lane Keep Assist, Safe Exit Assist, Rear Parking Sensors, Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking all comes as standard. As with many SUVs for 2021, the Kia also includes a rear passenger alert system with ultrasonic sensors that let you know if you left a child or pet in the car.

In fact, even in its LX base trim, the Telluride includes such generous equipment features as smart key access with push button start, 5 USB ports spread across all three rows, automatic windows, LED running lights, dynamic cruise control, variable intermittent windshield wipers and an eight-inch infotainment display. The infotainment system's touch screen and voice recognition system make it very easy to use and navigate. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a number of safety and convenience features that you can download to your smartphone's data plan for free.

Comparing the Kia's price by model range, the base LX starts with an MSRP of $31,990. The S trim includes AWD for $34,390. The EX trim ads many more features, starting at $37,390 and the luxurious SX with its full package of goodies including dual sunroofs, quality leather and a larger 10-inch touchscreen, comes in at $42,190. Still less than half the price of a Range Rover.
The Wrap Up
Overall, this Kia is rewarding to drive and a truly great value for the money. Especially when compared to the only other family-sized, three-row crossover SUVs out there. When going head-to-head with such mid-size SUVs as the Ford Explorer, the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Highlander, the Kia Telluride is extremely competitive in all respects. There are some SUVs that are bigger in size such as the Volkswagen Atlas, or more fun to drive such as the Ford Explorer ST, but this Kia crossover hits the sweet spot of giving you the best of everything all in one pleasing, family-friendly package.

The 2021 Telluride has been rated 4.4 out of 5 by Kelley Blue Book where it garnered the Best Buy Award of 2020. It was awarded Car of the Year by the 2020 World Car Awards and took North American Utility Vehicle of the Year honors as well. The IIHS claimed the Telluride as the Top Safety Pick of 2020.
