Toyota RAV4 (2013 - 2020)

America's favorite crossover, the RAV4 has it all. Nine trim levels cover all your needs including the base LE, the off-road ready Adventure, to the top-tier Limited. The fourth generation (2013-2018) RAV4 models are the best deals. They provide 38.4 cubic feet of cargo room, 73.4 feet of space with the rear seats stowed, and are powered by a faithful 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that churns out 176 horsepower.

 

The fifth generation (2019-2024) bumped up the power to 203 horses. A meaty TRD Off-Road trim version appeared in 2020 and such infotainment marvels as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard. A Hybrid version came on the scene in 2016 with an EPA rated 34 mpg city/30 mpg highway.

 

Nissan Rogue (2014 - 2020)

A truly terrific compact crossover SUV, the second generation Rogue (2014-2020) featured a sleek new body style and came in S, SL, and SV trim levels. All versions came with anti-lock brakes, traction, and anti-skid control. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine brought 170 horsepower married to a CVT transmission. All-wheel drive was optional. From 2016 on, the Rogue included Nissan Connect navigation and optional collision mitigation system. It includes 39.4 cubic feet of cargo room, 70 cu. ft. with the rear seats stowed.

 

A Hybrid version of the Rogue rolled into showrooms in 2017 with its 2-liter, 141 hp gas engine mated to a 40 hp electric motor. The EPA estimated the Hybrid was capable of 33 mpg city/30 mpg highway. In 2018, the Rogue got a bigger seven-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard plus a suite of driver assist features.

 

Honda CR-V (2017 - 2021)

The fifth generation CR-V (2017-2021) five-seater compact crossover offers the best deals as a used SUV and got a facelift in the U.S. market in 2019 along with the addition of a new Hybrid version. Advanced safety systems are available as standard equipment. The Honda Sensing suite of driver assist features include forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and more.

 

Choose between a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower or a 1.5-liter turbocharged 190 horse version. The EPA estimated a fuel efficiency rating of 28 mpg city/34 mpg highway for the turbo. Depending on the configuration, the Honda gives you 37.6 to 39.2 cubic feet of storage, and 75.8 cubic feet of room with the rear seats down.

 

Chevrolet Equinox (2018 - 2022)

The third generation Equinox mid-size crossover (2018-2022) was available in four trim levels: L, LS, LT, and Premier. A 1.6-liter turbo diesel variant was available on the LT and Premier in 2018. The standard powertrains were the 1.5-liter with 175 horsepower and a 2-liter that produced 252 horses. EPA fuel economy ratings for the 1.5-liter engine were 26 mpg city/32 mpg highway.

 

New for the third gen SUV was an all-wheel drive system which allowed you to disengage the driveshaft to reduce friction, and such safety features as a surround-view camera, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning. A sportier RS trim version appeared in 2022.

 

Ford Escape (2013 - 2019)

Another favorite compact crossover on our list is the Ford Escape. First introduced in 2001, Ford has been improving it ever since. The third generation (2013 - 2019) debuted such new features as a hand-free liftgate, an eco-friendly interior, and the MyFord Touch entertainment system with an all-new user interface. Engine choices included a 2.5-liter inline-four and two Ecoboost turbocharged engines in 1.5- and 2-liter configurations. The EPA's highest rating of 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway went to the 1.5-liter Ecoboost.

 

A 2017 refresh included a new look front and back, a new Sync 3 infotainment system and driver assist features included adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and lane-keep assist. Cargo space in the Escape is an impressive 34.3 cubic feet in the back and 67.8 cubic feet with the rear seats stowed.

 

Jeep Grand Cherokee (2018 - 2022)

Always ready for adventure, the fourth generation Jeep Grand Cherokee chassis is a steel unibody with four-wheel independent suspension. Choose between a 3.6-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The Hemi shuts down four cylinders for low-power driving. Trailer towing is rated at 7,400 pounds. EPA ratings give the V6 the best score at 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway. All trim levels let you add all-wheel drive, which is standard on the Trailhawk Edition.

 

Inside, the Cherokee is remarkably comfortable. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became available in 2018 along with an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Eleven trim levels include the luxurious Limited, High Altitude, and Summit that features heated leather seats, premium audio, and such driver assist features as blind spot monitoring and rear cross path detection and more.
